1. I am going on holiday, what should I do about my worms? |
|
Great news! The worms in your Wormery will be happy to look after themselves for a month or more. Adding a few soaked wood chips or soaked corrugated cardboard to their last feed will help them.

2. There seem to be a lot of worms will there be too many for the composter? |
|
No, worms will breed and this will help your composter be even more efficient. The type of worms which we supply naturally regulate their own numbers - now how clever is that?

3. Is there a temperature band at which the wormery will work best? |
|
The best temperature is between 15C and 25C inside the bin. The kind of temperature where a human would feel comfortable enough to wear a t-shirt is perfect for the wormery. If you think it is getting really cold you can bring them into the garage or even the kitchen - they will love it there! Alternatively, wrapping some bubble-wrap or an old blanket around will help insulation during the colder months.

4. Would the worm bin be better insulated? |
|
Insulation will keep your worms working harder during the winter months. If you can't bring the Wormery inside, or into a garage or shed, then wrapping around some bubble-wrap or an old blanket will help during the cooler months.

5. When I open the lid there are worms clinging to it is there a reason for this? |
|
The most likely reason is that the worms are hungry, or that something in the conditions of the bin are not to their liking. Check that the contents aren't too wet (moist is best) and add some lime mix to neutralise acidity - that should help!

6. How long will the worms live? |
|
Longer than you think is the answer! In the wild they will lucky to survive a few months but they have been recorded in bins living up to 10 years although half of this would be more common. The great thing about running a Wormery, though, is that you should never need to replace the worms as long as it's operating as it should.

7. If I cut the worms in half will this increase the population? |
|
NO! This is a myth! Cutting a worm in half will sometimes result in one half surviving but certainly not both. More likely is that the worm will just die - just like you would!

8. How long will it take to get the wormery going? |
|
It takes time for the worms to settle in and for you to get the conditions right so getting started can take a few months. As long as you're patient and don't overfeed them in the early months, they will begin to really thrive. As they establish and start their breeding cycle you'll be able to add more and more food waste.

9. Should you turn The Worm Works like a compost heap? |
|
No, let the worms do all the work that's why you have them, they will do everything for you.

10. Can you use tap water in the wormery? |
|
It is unlikely that you will need to moisten the Wormery, normally it is the other way round. However, if you do need to moisten the waste then tap water is fine.

11. How much food should I put in the The worm works. |
|
The instruction booklet will give you advice, but you will know if you are feeding them to much if the food lies in the bin uneaten. Remember it is better to under feed than over feed.

12. Will mould on the food harm the worms? |
|
No they will be just fine it is just a natural element within the decay process. The Worms in the Wormery like it best when it is rotten and mouldy. It's easier for them to stomach!
