Using worms to compost food waste is a very successful, proven and popular method used throughout the world. It works because it is simple. The worms eat at your leftover food scraps and digest the food. Living their lives in the Wormery they breed and eat with the end product being the very best potting compost available anywhere and a highly nutritious and bio-rich liquid fertiliser for your plants, flowerbeds and lawns.
It is technically possible to carry out this process in any old plastic box, but it is commonly accepted that the most successful way to compost using worms is in a purpose-made 'Wormery' such as The Worm Works from Original Organics. That is because close attention has been paid to the design allowing for optimum conditions for the worms and a drainage process designed to avoid waterlogging, odours and mess.
The Worm Works Wormery operates very simply. The Wormery is made up of multiple trays. You place worms (usually supplied) in the bottom tray along with some food scraps which the worms eat. As the worms establish and breed you can gradually feed them more and more. As the bottom tray fills, you begin adding waste to the next-tray up. The worms follow the food and migrate upwards into the next tray leaving behind a tray of excellent worm casts (compost). The liquid fertiliser collects in the bottom tray where there is a tap to drain it out. The most common configurations for The Worm Works Wormery is to operate using 3 or 4 composting trays, though some people do add more. The great thing about The Worm Works Wormery is that it can be easily expanded.
The Worm Works Wormery is constructed from very high quality recycled plastic and is backed by a 5 year warranty on materials and workmanship. It is very simple to assemble and can be stored inside or out.
The Worm Works requires only a little effort - perhaps 15 minutes a week. It will even look after itself while you go on holiday.
Is there a smell?
As long as you are operating the bin as instructed there will be no smell.
Where do I get the worms from?
If you are ordering direct, the worms are usually included with The Worm Works when it is delivered. If you buy from one of our stockists, you should find a "Worm Voucher" inside which entitles you to claim worms by post at no extra cost.
Where do I keep The Worms Works?
It is best to keep The Worm Works in a sheltered part of the garden or on a balcony. In very cold weather it can be placed in a garage or shed. Many people keep them in the kitchen.
Can the worms escape?
The Worm Works is designed to allow air to flow through it while preventing the worms from escaping. However, because of it's multi-tray design the odd escapee is nothing to worry about and can happen from time to time. That said, when the Wormery is operating in full-swing, the worms wont want to go anywhere as the Wormery provides their ideal environment.
How much compost is produced?
It really depends on the quantity of food scraps you place in The Worm Works. For a large family you can have additional composting trays which will produce more compost.
